From 6th – 12th February 2023, we had the pleasure of celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2023. The week long event gave us the opportunity to recognise the achievements of apprentices, not only at Anglian, but across the whole UK, and allowed us to reflect on the positive impact they have on our business and the economy. This was an important week for Anglian, as we regularly enrol and invest in local people who are looking for employment and education via the apprenticeship route. In this article we will explore what an apprenticeship at Anglian looks like and introduce you to two of our latest scaffolding apprentices.
What is an apprenticeship? An apprenticeship involves paid employment whilst gaining valuable experience and knowledge.
Across the Anglian divisions, we are proud to play an active role in supporting apprenticeship schemes in our industry, offering different levels of opportunities across the demolition, asbestos and earthworks sectors.
We are particularly proud of the work our scaffolding division have carried out to support apprentices across Norfolk to build experience in the sector.
Over the past five years, our Scaffolding Division alone have invested in 11 trainee scaffolders. With eight of these now fully qualified having passed their course, we currently have three trainee apprentices who are at different stages of their qualification, all carrying out their studies whilst working on site with our team.
“It is a privileged to support this scheme and offer these young people the opportunity to learn and gain paid work experience with us. To watch our trainees implement the latest industry knowledge and skills across our site at the end of their course is a pleasure.”
Wayne Sampson – Scaffolding Commercial Manager.
Vadim and Kieron are the latest apprentices to complete their adult CITB Trainee Scaffolding course with us at Anglian.
Shortly after beginning their time with us as labourers, with Kieron joining the team in October 2020, and Vadim in April 2021, our scaffolding division decided to invest in them after they both showed a keen interest and passion for their work.
After gaining paid experience with us for six months, we entered them into their COTS course, which teaches the basics of the industry and how to safely work with scaffolding and access equipment. This was then followed by another six months where the pair were able to expand their on site knowledge and learn from our expert team. Having had a total of 12 months of experience with Anglian’s Scaffolding Division, they were enrolled in a two week training course to complete their Part 1A, which was shortly followed but their part 1B. This allowed them to be Trainee Scaffolders.
Whilst still working with our team, both Vadim and Kieron went on to complete their Part 2A and Part 2B and concluded their assessment with a portfolio. Finally they were both signed off as qualified Basic Scaffolders, allowing them to run a crew.
The next steps for the duo would be to become qualified Advanced Scaffolders, which would teach them how to read design drawings so they can head up crews that involve design elements. For now, we are excited to have these two as part of our everyday scaffolding team and see them demonstrate the skills they have learnt from their apprenticeship course.
Vadim Harbuz and Kieron Ford.
